Abstract
Studies on "Women and Gender" have attracted the attention of contemporary researchers in recent decades. Karen Bauer is a contemporary thinker who, in her book "Gender Hierarchy in the Quran: Ancient Interpretations, New Responses," examines the views of Muslim scholars regarding the interpretation of verses related to "gender hierarchy." Among the various foundations that Bauer adopts in her research, the "impact of intellectual context and social conditions on interpretation" is a significant theoretical basis. Taking this into account, she evaluates and analyzes the interpretations of scholars from the medieval to modern periods concerning verses 228 of Surah Al-Baqarah and 34 of Surah An-Nisa. According to her, the intellectual context and social conditions were not of great importance to the interpreters of the medieval period, as they primarily relied on the authoritative interpretations of earlier scholars. In contrast, the intellectual context and social conditions during the lives of modern interpreters have influenced their interpretations, and, social concerns have formed the core of their interpretations. In this research, Bauer's statements regarding the position of scholars from the medieval to modern periods on the issue of "gender hierarchy" are reported,,then her theoretical foundation and the results based on it are evaluated through library research.
